Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, this two level facility is the next evolution of Mandell’s popular pre-school. Beginning with kindergarten and first grade, this new site expands their curriculum to a K-4 program. JRS’ creativity with innovative materials and experience in school design has resulted in a unique learning environment that is child friendly and budget conscious. Green design solutions were encouraged and are liberally applied. Homasote, a recycled wallboard, is used in each classroom – perfect for mounting student projects it also provides sound control and is easily renewed with a fresh coat of paint. Rubber flooring from reprocessed tires is durable and easy to clean and drop-ceiling tiles are manufactured from recycled materials. Wall paneling of certified wood from sustainable harvests provides a unique backdrop in the reception area with displays of student art housed in strategically placed niches. The reception desk’s counter top is fashioned from recovered glass. Only non-toxic low-VOC paint has been specified throughout the project. Conduit and duct systems in select parts of the school were left exposed to teach students about the inner workings of their surroundings. Cheerful colors are used in nuanced ways and natural light supplemented with energy efficient diffused lighting arrangements provides a no-glare atmosphere.
