FIRM OVERVIEW
OUR VIEW Our directive is to thoroughly understand the client’s operation and together plan an environment that promotes productivity and worker satisfaction. To achieve that, our step is to develop a comprehensive program, which begins with seeking answers to critical questions:
What are your organization’s mission, philosophy, structure, goals?
What is your organization’s direction regarding sustainable design?
Who are your employees and what are their tasks?
How do departments interact and, most importantly, how do you plan to grow the business and shape the future?
we provide bridges between creative thinking and real-world needs. Finally, we produce complete and detailed construction documents that encom- pass every aspect of the building and engineer- ing phases. JRS is also available to manage the entire construction process to your advantage. At your option, our professionals will write the permits, manage cost-control, specify furniture, and even commission artwork. Our in-depth knowledge of code requirements and local building departments enables us to expedite the permit process. At every level we monitor progress and devise solutions, ensuring an on- time and on-budget outcome with JRS as your single point of responsibility.
Next, we begin the creative process, translating all this data and information into an architectural vision. Our design team creates concept drawings allowing you to visually evaluate specific solutions. Based on your input and guidance, the JRS team walks you through the entire process, creating a design direction that satisfies your criteria. There are many tools and assets we bring to bear along the way. Our sample library - one of the most comprehensive in the industry - allows us to select the precise materials that will optimize your design’s look and functionality. JRS can then use 3D modeling to take you on a virtual “tour” of the new environment allowing you to experience the look, feel, texture, color and dimensions of the finished space. At every stage

CONSISTENCY, COMPLETENESS & QUALITY
JRS promotes consistency, completeness and quality by utilizing standard forms, data sheets, questionnaires and report formats while reviewing drawings, preforming field investigations, conducting interviews or preparing building and site reports. Quality control is maintained by periodically conducting audits of procedures and processes, making sure critical steps are being taken for consistent and comprehensive services. Because the same team develops the project from concept to completion, the original intent is never compromised - rather, it gathers strength and integrity. Working in unison inspires team members to do their best work. For example, when Interior Design contributes ideas at an early stage, the insights can influence planning of the exterior design. It is our experience that this interplay evokes the best total design solutions. Helen Keller Services – Corporate Headquarters (25,000 sf) Seeking to maintain their Brooklyn roots, Helen Keller Services identified the former A&S’s back office, shipping and warehouse building for their corporate headquarters and children’s learning center. HKS’ objectives included flexible space promoting communication and collaboration; an inviting fun environment, easy navigation for the sight impaired and consolidation of space. Creativity is obvious as soon as one arrives. A braille-inspired tactile wall in the entrance projects a sense of joy and optimism to inspire not only students and staff, but also visitors. The reception area and entire space is bathed in natural light, one of JRS’ primary design objectives. Windowed offices with interior glass walls, classroom clerestory windows and vision panels help distribute natural light especially to interior workspaces and classrooms. Tactile floor tiles and high contrast flooring materials were selected especially for HKS’ visitors, students and staff allowing them to navigate the facility independently. Tactile wall panels, textured wallcoverings and brightly colored acoustical wall panels also aid in their navigation while creating an inviting and whimsical atmosphere. Yet, the overall color palette alludes corporate. To address their heightened noise and light sensitivity, JRS’ design includes dimmable lighting, NRC highest rated ceiling materials, acoustical textured wallcoverings and padded flooring. The space also includes a “learning kitchen/pantry”, an eye examination lab and a reconfigurable, multipurpose conference center.
Sophisticated while budget sensitive tele-communications and videoconferencing allow staff to collaborate efficiently within HKS’ space as well as remotely with parents and colleagues.

CHDI Foundation – Interior Office Renovation (17,000 sf) CHDI Foundation manages a diverse portfolio of Huntington disease specific research projects through a virtual model that encourages scientific collaboration to more directly connect academic research, drug discovery and clinical development. With three locations, CHDI was looking to expand their Princeton office by acquiring an additional and contiguous 6,500 sq. ft.; also making changes to their existing space. Their growth dictated the need for more private offices along with a variety of collaborative spaces offering casual seating areas to encourage and allow for spontaneous meetings. Other requirements included bench seating for visitors as well as new “phone rooms” to provide privacy for employees who work in open work areas. The new sleek café area is flanked by booth style seating designed with a rustic flair and soft lighting. A space which offers employees and guests a chance to relax or have that private conversation with a colleague. At the end of the café hallway is a multi-tiered seating area welcoming the next collaborative opportunity. Passing to the perimeter offices are lounge poufs in colors to accent the wide space to create energy which are placed in front of a scientific designed wall covering that is a takeoff on CHDI’s work. With the expansion, the existing pantry was renovated to provide more seating. A new reception desk was installed to accommodate two employees while providing a visual connection to the new space facilitated by new glass entry doors. These provided a view across the elevator lobby to the new space’s entrance. Lighting was also upgraded which refreshed and integrated the existing space with the expansion, thereby creating a welcoming and collaborative work environment, critical to the success of CHDI’s mission.

JPMorgan Chase – Corporate Interior Renovation (43,000 sq. ft.) This new home to several corporate functions entailed a mix of work environments including bench seating, collaborative spaces and
enclosed offices. Conference rooms accommodating four to twenty individuals were designed along with a 3,000 square foot training facility. A key design objective was to include branding and motivational messages in various work areas and corridors. The project also included a break area for this area designed to support over 200 employees.
CLK Properties – Lobby Renovation (25,000 sq. ft.)
This three story atrium area was in need of an upgrade to improve it aesthetically and ultimately increase its utilization. Lounge seating is arranged to offer comfortable huddle areas while different size pods create a more intimate and welcoming environment. Glass enclosures with wood slats provide privacy but allow light to filter in. The added large and colorful circular ceiling rings create interest in this tall and otherwise stark space.
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey – Interior Renovation (2,500 sq. ft.) Located in Bradley Hall, this former theatre was converted into an office and research space for visual perception and cognitive science. Like many turn of the last century buildings, it offered large windows facing west, cast in place concrete columns with mushroom capitals and nearly 13 foot ceilings. The design solution addressing specific research requirements used the perimeter for offices and huddle rooms while the center area took advantage of the abundant natural
light and provided a mix of lounge and bar height seating. A floating ceiling was installed over the conference table to define the space and address sound. Warm tones and light fixtures appropriate for the industrial design concept complimented the space.

Hapaq-Lloyd - Corporate Headquarters Interior Renovation (23,000 sf) Due to water damage on the top floor of their headquarters building, Hapaq-Lloyd needed to address their executive office area along with several supporting functions housed on the same floor. Given the nature of the damage, they decided to reexamine these areas to see how they could gain more efficiencies as well as upgrade the various offices including the executive suite, public areas and refreshment stations. Business continuity needs required some staff to be relocated immediately since sections of the floor were not able to be used. In discussing the requirements with the client, it was determined that the work needed to be completed in phases, addressing the need of relocating staff and renovating specific sections of the floor at a time. With that in mind, JRS worked on various design concepts. A key objective was to integrate their brand and more specific company colors of orange and grey, into the final solution that was “clean” and “fresh”. After extensive research on finishes, JRS found a combination that fully satisfied the client from both a design and budgetary perspective. JRS then utilized their in-house 3-D rendering capabilities to provide various views of the proposed spaces and finishes with the client actively involved in the process. JRS also introduced art and architecture elements related to their business, shipping, as part of the proposed solution. The hallway leading into the executive suite created a gallery on the history of shipping. Projecting wall panels framed photographs and models of the shipping industry. These wall panels played off the construction of ships. Panels of wood reflecting the older ships and then a mix of metal panels to reflect modern shipping. The renderings provided the client with multiple perspectives of the executive area and supporting spaces to give a complete view of the proposed solutions.

Covance - New Office Standards & Office Relocation (18,000 sf) JRS assisted Covance with the relocation of their downtown Nashville offices to an office park outside of the city. This work included developing a new workplace design strategy and involved transitioning from traditional workspaces to one that incorporates bench seating and a variety of collaborative and community spaces. Given the significant change in the workplace design, new furniture standards were required. This process involved JRS working closely with this client to develop the new guidelines. Multiple vendors were engaged to assess their philosophies and capabilities. After narrowing this list to two, mock-ups were installed, thereby giving the employees the opportunity to “touch and feel” the options. Their feedback was captured and used in the decision process. This approach significantly facilitated organizational change and ultimately employee buy-in. The new design reduced square footage per person from 140 to 115, a significant reduction and impact to real estate costs. Core to the design were the collaboration and community spaces as well as the quiet rooms for employees to escape to a more tranquil environment. A client conference center was created offering flexible space for training. Interiors were transformed into an inviting space and employees were provided with a large break room which includes a “bar style” seating area and vending machines. Lockers are available to employees for their storage of personal affects. Having completed the successful rollout and implementation of this new design concept, the client is looking to implement it at other locations.

Teachers Federal Credit Union – Corporate Interior Headquarters (80,000 sq. ft.) This new state-of-the-art multi-story headquarters offers space that is transitional and flexible to accommodate the organization’s needs over time. Standards were developed with the design team incorporating economical materials in creative ways. The facility includes training and meeting rooms with touchpad AV controls, an executive board room, a processing center and a cafeteria for 120 people. LED lighting fixtures were used throughout.
Sperry Associates Federal Credit Union – Ground-up Corporate Headquarters (20,000 sq. ft.)
JRS welcomed this opportunity to create a new image for Sperry Associates and add a new element to Jericho Turnpike’s streetscape that would contextually blend with the surrounding neighborhood. Light played an important role as a distinguished design element. Different qualities of light were achieved through the use of various types of glass panels (translucent, clear, solar, and insulated) and different methods of introducing light into the interior spaces. Special attention was given to the environmental sensibility, climate control and energy conservation.
Valient Reality – New Ground-Up Building (11,500 sq. ft.) Located along a main thoroughfare, this office building’s exterior is primarily glass with granite veneer accents along with a metal mesh screen on the 2nd floor to accommodate branding for the tenants. The use of glass was critical in the design concept to allow for natural light into the space. However to minimize glare and overheating of the building, horizontally extruded fins were used to also help define the linear planes of the building. A skylight was strategically placed to illuminate the conference room on the 2nd floor.

Catlin Group Limited – Interior Office Renovation (24,000 sf) JRS assisted Catlin Insurance Group's design firm, Loia Budde & Associates, with the relocation of their New York City offices in downtown Manhattan. Catlin, a Bermuda based specialty insurance and reinsurance company, selected one of the financial district’s most iconic buildings, 32 Old Slip, for their new setting. The 24,000 square feet requirement involved a full gut renovation of the former tenant space and made optimal use of the building’s riverfront location and breathtaking panoramas. Open workstations were specified throughout to take advantage of the 36 th floor’s 360-degree views of Manhattan, Brooklyn and the East River. Use of glass panel dividers and office partitions in the column free space further maximize the visual effect. The abundance of natural lighting resulting from these conditions called for comprehensive light controls including motion detectors in non-perimeter space and digital photo sensors for “daylight harvesting.” Set along the perimeter offices, the sensors detect daylight levels and automatically adjust the output level of electric lighting to create a balance. The result is energy savings. Custom wood paneling and marble flooring make for a quiet elegant entrance to the facility. In addition to workstation areas and private offices, the fit out included six conference rooms, a board room and an executive break room with pantry and full kitchen. JRS logistical support was critical to the completion of the assignment. Challenges met included coordinating construction milestones with base building public spaces and building over an existing government agency operating 24/7. Our expertise in working with the city’s Department of Buildings shepherded the project through an accelerated schedule and an on-target opening day.

ESL Federal Credit Union – New Corporate Headquarters Interiors (156,000 sq. ft.)
Founded by George Eastman in 1920, ESL Federal Credit Union (Eastman Savings and Loan) is one of the nation's largest and most successful credit unions. Because of our expertise in Financial Institutions and Credit Unions, JRS was retained to perform schematic design through design development services for the 156,000 sq. ft. construction of their new corporate headquarters in Rochester, New York.
In addition, JRS also provided planning and programming services to systematize the extensive interior program which included the credit union’s business operations, as well as a disaster recovery center, call center, training facility, fitness center and cafeteria/catering facility.
Chase - Corporate Interior Office Consolidation (130,000 sq. ft.)
As part of a strategic consolidation plan, Chase engaged JRS to develop a design program for the relocation of three NJ mortgage groups into one central facility. Involving the renovation of three floors, the JRS team was challenged to find economies while delivering the project within an aggressive timeframe. JRS conducted a full furniture inventory of the relocating offices and identified enough reusable stock to result in significant savings. Our designers also took advantage of furnishings left in place by the former tenant. Haworth floor to ceiling perimeter offices were refurbished and added to with identical new product to maintain continuity of style. Steelcase workstations were new – 800 in all – and featured one of the first sustainable fabric coverings .
Cablevision - Multiple Interior/Exterior Corporate Renovations (Various Sizes – Totaling over 500,000 sq. ft.) JRS Architect, P.C. has worked with Cablevision on numerous projects in multiple locations for over 10 years. Solving their space issues, adjacency concerns and overall corporate style in several of their locations, these projects have included office space, ancillary space and head end projects totaling over 500,000 square feet. In addition, JRS has worked on multiple interior renovations in
Cablevision’s Corporate Headquarters located in Bethpage, NY. Examples of these projects include (but not limited to) renovations to over 53 restrooms, their cafeteria, their fitness center, the lobby and various offices as well as developing new standards consisting of carpeting, furniture, paint colors and wall textures.

Hanover Community Bank - Corporate Headquarters Renovation (11,000 sf) With significant growth since its formation in 2012, Hanover Community Bank out-grew their headquarters. So, they were faced with the need to identify a new location. As part of this growth strategy, they also deemed it important to brand their image. JRS worked closely with the management team to define their emerging image – uniquely clean and crisp, while instilling confidence to their program -- an executive, mortgage lending and an administrative area. An existing three-story 11,000 sq. ft. office building along a main corridor was selected. While it had “good bones”, the building exterior was tired, dated, and the interior needed to be completely gutted. JRS reviewed the program and ultimately suggested to reduce the three-story lobby to two and take a small portion of the covered parking area on the ground floor to gain additional space which ultimately lead to more office area and the ability to include a small branch. Utilizing a mix of traditional offices with benching, the consistent design element was the Bank’s standard blue which was augmented by shades of gold, tan and copper in a white background. The executive floor design incorporated walls of wood and glass to provide warmth and offer natural light yet offer the necessary privacy via partially opaque glass in a wood framed system. Smart conference rooms were designed with a mix of traditional and high-top seating. JRS selected all the artwork for their new headquarters. The lobby, an internal and external focal point, was modified from a curved curtain wall to being squared off using stone and a new glass curtain wall. Branding was key for this area. The exterior was repainted, and horizontal blue lighting and blue awnings were added. This repurposed building now clearly and proudly represents Hanover Community Bank.

JPMorgan Chase – New Processing Facility (186,000 sq. ft.) & subsequent renovation and addition (250,000 sq. ft.) JPMorgan Chase engaged JRS Architect, P.C. to design a new facility to house their Check Processing operation and support space. The proposed site was presented as a “shell only” structure. JRS was hired to convert this space into a state-of-the-art, Class-A office and operations facility. Key objective elements identified in design of this facility included:
Security and Access Control
Work Flow
Generator and UPS Back-up Facilities
Full Service Cafeteria
Cutting-edge, High-tech Operations Facility
At the main entrance of the building, 12 skylights and vaulted ceiling fill the lobby with light. The main security console and monitoring station is located central to the main entry and loading dock spaces and are the only entry points into the facility. Understanding the flow of work into the building, through the building and then out of the building, was critical in the overall design, layout and successful operation of the facility. JRS subsequently worked on this building to expand from its original 186,000 sf structure to 250,000 square feet, retrofitting it to a Tier IV Data Center.

Widex USA - Corporate Headquarters Adaptive Reuse / Interior Renovation (65,000 sf) Denmark-based Widex, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of hearing aids, has a passion for innovative architecture. Their CO2-neutral headquarters near Copenhagen has received international attention for its cutting- edge design and environment friendly technologies. When it came time to fit out a building to serve as its U.S. headquarters, Widex asked JRS to fuse a commitment to design excellence with a budget conscious approach. JRS worked on several test fit scenarios leading to the selection of the current location, a former industrial showroom. Seeing potential in the three-story structure, our team provided design solutions for an energy efficient 21 st Century headquarters. To human-scale the 35-foot-high Production Area, exposed ceilings were retained for their open aesthetic while floating rectangular lights achieve the effect of a suspended ceiling without the cost. To maximize air dispersion, fabric duct sock technology was an attractive alternative to costly metal ductwork. AC and heating are controlled by motorized damper. In the winter, the system draws in warm air at the ceiling circulating it to the floor level; in the summer cooler air from the floor level is returned. The building is additionally equipped with motorized window blinds that open and close in relation to the sun, reducing added heat gain. Workflow was a major factor in our layout of departments and adjacencies. JRS also planned for visitors with a windowed interior walkway allowing views of the manufacturing process on the first floor. A circular light fixture suspended in the main hallway serves as a direction finder in the large facility.
Consolidating operations from four area locations, the new headquarters is testimony to our team’s ability communicate creatively with an overseas client.
